Teachers Unions And The Government

teachers striking againFrustration is a word that comes to mind, when I think of Teachers’ Unions creating strike action so soon after this past election.

In case anyone has forgotten, they along with other counterpart unions worked very hard to get Ms Wynne and her gang of Liberals elected to a majority government.

So it begs the question, will the teachers and their union ever be satisfied?  Will there ever be a government that won’t put them at odds at the negotiating table?

It’s pretty clear that union intervention in an election can heavily influence the outcome – so what will Ms Wynne do?  She does sort of “owe” them for making her way to the Premier’s throne.

The province does have to curb its outlay of tax cash at some point.  Will the unions who helped her, feel they should be immune from austerity measures?  I suppose that’s a rhetorical question.  Quid pro quo.

The claim is they are concerned about “class size”.  While it makes for a good slogan, don’t be fooled.  The topic of money and pay and other cash entitlements is never going to be far from any union and their negotiation demands.

Especially since we have just found out that the Power Workers Union just got a nice plum from Wynne’s Liberals.

We should not be surprised that more plum goodies will be demanded, and given out by this government.  Now that the first plum was handed over to the Power Workers Union, those plums will keep being added into future contracts for others.   That will include those for teachers. Count on it.
